Gamcheon Cultural Village

Previous

This area of Busan is far removed from the seaside area where we stayed.  Started in the early twentieth century by the government, it was an area for the city’s poor to live but remain close enough to provide labor for the large Busan port.  After the Korean war, the area expanded but continued to struggle with poverty.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism carried out a restoration in 2009 to create a cultural hub.  Artists and art students were encouraged to maintain the area decorate it with their art.  This government lead effort gave the area new live.  It is now a colorful collection of houses, shops and restaurants.

Set on a steep hillside with colorfully painted houses and shops the twisted alleys offer much to be explored and photographed.  Tourism to the area has bloomed.
