WOLF'S LAIR

The Wolf’s Lair built in 1941 to serve as Hitler’s headquarters for the Eastern Front, the invasion into the Soviet Union, Operation Barbarossa.  It was in use from June 1941 until January 1945.  The complex was blown up in January 1945 to prevent it from being captured intact by the advancing Soviet army.  The Soviets arrived at the Wolf’s Lair within 48 hours of the destruction.

The July 1944 assassination attempt on Hitler took place here.

Our guide took us all over the complex to look at the destroyed buildings.  She knew which pile of ruins had been in their hayday.  After lunch she took us to the site of the railroad station where Hitler and Mussolini had met.

I enjoyed photographing the lines where the ceilings once were.
